About RCM Messenger Service

RCM Messenger Service enables irrigated and rainfed lowland rice farmers in the Philippines with a crop and nutrient management guideline from RCM to receive in-season reminders and advice through SMS. RCM Messenger Service uses a farmer's answers to a very quick interview after the crop establishment to verify actual date of sowing or transplanting, variety, seedling age for transplanted rice and expected water status for the current season. The answers are used to adjust the pre-season recommendation from RCM and send the adjusted recommendation to farmers periodically during the season through SMS.

RCM Messenger Service enables farmers, who have already received a Rice Crop Manager (RCM) recommendation for an upcoming rice-cropping season, to receive farming advice and reminders for the same rice-cropping season through SMS. The use of this software is subject to the following terms and conditions:

Verification of the farmer’s field is required to continue with the interview with the farmer. In case of phone interview, only authorized staff of the Department of Agriculture and its partners will have access to use this software and interview farmers with the software. The content of the software is subject to change without notice.

Limitation of liability

Under no circumstances and under no legal theory, whether tort, contract, or otherwise, shall the Board of Directors of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) or any of its affiliates, officers, employees, or other r epresentatives be liable to you or any other person for any direct, indirect, special, incidental, or consequential damages of any character including, without limitation, damages for loss of goodwill, work stoppage, computer failure or malfunction, or any and all other commercial damages or losses, specifically including damages to crops and soil resulting from the application of the software, or for any damages or liabilities even if IRRI shall have been informed of the possibility of such damages or liabilities, or for any claim by any other party. This limitation of liability shall apply to liability for death or personal injury except to the extent applicable law prohibits such limitation.

Questionnaire for RCM Messenger Service

The questions used in RCM Messenger Service for interviewing farmers are available as a downloadable questionnaire, which can be printed.

The printed questionnaire can alternatively be used to interview farmers. The information collected with a questionnaire can then be entered into RCM Messenger Service to obtain a guideline for the interviewed farmer.

Instructions for using RCM Messenger Service

  1. To start, select on a language (Tagalog or English). If it is your first time to access RCM Messenger, this will be the first page you see. If not, you can access with the button, located on the bottom left of the page, then click on Language. Select English for this version of RCM Messenger.
  2. For a phone interview, the user must have an authorization to use RCM Messenger to interview farmers.
  3. Verify the field and the farmer with field ID or Reference number indicated in the RCM recommendation previously provided to the farmer.
  4. Answer questions for the farmer and farmer's field in the order that they appear on the screen. Select an answer from a list of choices by clicking or ticking, or typing the answer into the provided box.
  5. Use the scroll bar on the right side of the page with questions to go back to a previous question.
  6. After all the questions have been answered, click on the button that will appear on the bottom right of the page. An SMS will be automatically sent to the farmer and an updated RCM recommendation page with the crop management guideline will be generated.
  7. The attainable target yield and the fertilizer management in the updated RCM recommendation page may differ from the RCM recommendation page generated with the RCM interview if there are changes in variety growth duration and in date of crop establishment.
  8. The updated recommendation page contains a button. Click on the button to save the recommendation. Click on the button, click on the Saved farmer guidelines folder to see the saved recommendation.
  9. After saving the recommendation page, the following buttons appear in the output page:
    1. - for printing the recommendation.
    2. - for sharing the recommendation as an email
    3. - for downloading the recommendation as pdf. For smartphones, a pdf reader (Adobe Acrobat, Polaris, or Hancom) must be installed to open the downloaded file.
  10. Printing is optional. However, the recommendation page can be printed as follows:
    1. For desktop or laptop computer: Click on the button below the recommendation page.
    2. For smartphone: Connect the phone to a wireless printer. Mobile print app must be installed in the phone for wireless printing. Find the image from the Gallery or File folder then print.
  11. If a farmer has more than one field ready for interview, click on the button in the output page to proceed with the interview for the other field of the farmer.
  12. Click on the button in the output page to proceed with the interview for another farmer.

Manage rice as shown below:
Apply zinc to seedbed. Broadcast 1 kg zinc sulfate per sack of seed within 10 days after sowing.
Use 21 days old seedlings with good snail control. Younger seedling can increase plant vigor and yield.
